I have wanted to take my art quilting into a “painterly” direction, and the Cherrywood Van Gogh Challenge was a great way for me to start this journey. Van Gogh said painting portraits was "the only thing in painting that excites me to the depths of my soul…." He sought to convey his subject’s essence with “a deliberate disregard of those details that do not belong to the actual character.” In this portrait of my dog (who, coincidently is named “Dutch”) I used Van Gogh’s signature swirls, fluid lines and short, vigorous “brushstrokes” throughout the composition, seeking to capture Dutch’s essence. This piece was a finalist in the competition and is traveling.
